Container Libraries- Kawama Update

Our container libraries are a lifeline to communities who have no books. When we started, there were no bookshops or libraries for hundreds of kilometres around, and there was no reading culture in the area.

Our container libraries in Chipulukusu and George Compound now welcome over 2,000 children who regularly come to read as well as supporting schools and conducting regular literacy classes for adults and children. Additionally, we conduct outreach programmes to introduce books to local schools to whom books and laptop computers can be lent.

In August 2024, our fourth shipping container with tons of books arrived in Zambia. The majority of the contents of that shipping container were used for stocking the newly constructed library, and the container itself was brought to Intulo School in Kawama, where it will serve as our newest container-library.

As of November 2024, that new container library in Kawama is being fitted with doors and windows and supplied with furniture and books, with a view to being opened to the public before the end of the year.

All of our container libraries need an upgrade, and particularly they all now require the installation of solar power so that we can make better use of our laptop computers. In 2025, we plan to transform our basic containers into beacons of hope and learning for the communities that they serve.
